Readings: Ephesians 4 | Psalm 95
After three chapters describing everything God has done for us, Paul finally turns toward our response: “I therefore…beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called.” The order matters. Paul doesn't say, Live well enough so that God will call you. God has already called us. Now we learn to live like people who have received that grace. With humility, gentleness, patience, and love.
Psalm 95 adds an important warning: “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.” Following Jesus isn't simply agreeing with Christian ideas. It requires a heart that remains responsive to God. And often the evidence of a softened heart appears in the ordinary ways we treat other people. Who requires patience from you right now? Where might humility repair a relationship? Where are you being invited to “bear with” someone in love? The worthy life isn't flashy. It often looks like becoming more like Jesus with the people right in front of us.
Devotional Prompts:
- Of the qualities Paul mentions—humility, gentleness, patience, and love—which one is God inviting you to grow in right now?
- Is there a relationship where you might need to soften your heart, extend grace, or take a step toward unity?
Prayer: Lord, keep my heart soft toward you. Make me humble, gentle, patient, and willing to love the people you have placed around me.
