Readings: 1 Kings 18 | Psalm 86
1 Kings 18 is the ultimate showdown and one of the greatest events in the Bible. Elijah stands on Mount Carmel and asks the question that still echoes today: “How long will you waver between two opinions?” It’s a call to end the spiritual fence-sitting. The prophets of Baal scream and cut themselves, but there is no answer. After taunting them, Elijah offers a simple prayer, and fire falls from heaven, consuming even the water-soaked wood. God vindicates His Name, not because of Elijah’s bravado, but because God is jealous for His glory.
Theologically, this points to the exclusivity of the Gospel. In a pluralistic culture, Mount Carmel reminds us that Yahweh is not just a god, but the God. The fire of judgment that should have fallen on us for our wavering, actually fell on Jesus at the Cross. He took the heat so we could receive the rain of God’s blessing.
Psalm 86 is the perfect response to the Carmel victory: “Teach me your way, O Lord, that I may walk in your truth; give me an undivided heart.” After seeing God’s power, our only logical move is total surrender. We don’t need to scream or perform; we just need to walk in His truth with a heart that is no longer wavering.
Devotional Prompts:
- In what areas of your life are you currently wavering between God’s way and the world’s way?
- How does the fire on Mount Carmel change your perspective on God’s power versus the silence of modern idols (like money or fame)?
- What does it look like for you to have an undivided heart this week?
Prayer: God of fire and rain, thank You for being the one true God who hears and answers. Forgive me for the times I’ve wavered between opinions. Consume my distractions with the fire of Your Spirit and lead me in Your truth today. Amen.
