Readings: Isaiah 7 | Psalm 100

Isaiah 7 meets us in fear. King Ahaz trembles before enemies, yet God invites him: “Ask a sign.” Ahaz refuses, masking unbelief with false humility. Still, God gives a sign: “The virgin shall conceive… Immanuel.” Spoken over 700 years before Christ, this promise anchors the grand story, God Himself will come to be with His people.

“If you will not believe, you will not be established.” Ahaz’s problem wasn’t his circumstances, it was unbelief. Instead of trusting God’s word, he refused the very sign meant to strengthen his faith.

Yet God, in His mercy, gave the sign anyway. What Ahaz would not receive by faith, God established by promise.

And this sign was never just for Ahaz. Jesus is the fulfillment, the true Immanuel, God with us. The God who promised is the God who came, and is still with us today.

Psalm 100 shows us the right response: “Make a joyful noise… serve the Lord with gladness.” Where unbelief leads to instability, trust in God’s presence produces joy. Gratitude, as Pastor Dave Ricketts taught, is not passive, it humbles us. You cannot be grateful for what you think you deserve. True gratitude dismantles pride and becomes confession: I need help, and I have received it. It shifts us from self-sufficiency to dependence, helping us see not just the gift, but the Giver, drawing us closer to God, to others, and into deeper dependence on grace.

God is faithful. God is present. God is worthy.

The pattern is clear: God gives a promise, we respond in trust, trust produces joy, and joy overflows in worship.

The road may not be easy, but we are called to trust the Sign, and live with joy.

Devotional Prompts:

  1. Where are you tempted to rely on control instead of trusting God’s promises?
  2. How can gratitude reshape your response this week?

Prayer: Faithful and present God, You are with us. Forgive my tendency to trust myself over You. Teach me to rest in Your promises and to live with joyful gratitude. Fill my heart with trust, and lead me into deeper worship. Amen.
