Through the Storm

Acts 27 is fourteen days of terror at sea. The wind has the ship pinned down, cargo is being thrown overboard, and even seasoned sailors have given up hope of being saved. That’s when Paul stands up and says: an angel told me last night that not one of us will be lost, only the ship. No calming of the waves, no dramatic rescue… yet. Just a word, and a man calm enough to trust it. This is the pattern of faith (trust in God’s promises) running through the whole of Scripture. God’s people don’t usually get out of the storm before it’s over, they get carried through it.

I think of Ernest Shackleton’s crew, trapped for months in Antarctic ice after their ship, the Endurance, was slowly crushed to splinters. The vessel they’d planned around was a total loss. But every single man came home alive, because they had a leader who kept telling them the truth about their situation and never let go of hope. Sometimes God lets the “ship” (the plan, the timeline, the comfortable version of your life) go down. But He is far more committed to getting you safely to shore than keeping your original plan intact.

What’s sinking around you right now isn’t necessarily a sign you’ve been abandoned. It might just be the ship that got you there so God can earn your trust.

Prayer: Lord of wind and wave, when the storms of life feel unrelenting, anchor my soul in Your promises rather than my circumstances. Give me Paul’s sense of calm and bring me safely through, leaving the shipwreck behind. Amen.
