Readings: 1 Samuel 10 | Psalm 72
In 1 Samuel 10, the vibe shifts from a private meeting to a public reality. Saul is anointed, and the Spirit of God rushes upon him, changing him into “a different person.” This is a profound moment in the progressive revelation of Scripture. In the Old Testament, the Spirit came upon specific people for specific tasks (like kings and prophets). In the New Testament, because of Christ, the Spirit dwells in all believers. Saul’s transformation is a shadow of the regeneration we experience in Christ, the ultimate Anointed One.
The contrast between Saul and the ideal king described in Psalm 72 (a messianic psalm) is striking. The Psalmist prays for a king who “defends the cause of the poor” and “delivers the needy.” While Saul started with the Spirit’s empowerment, his reign would eventually become about his own ego rather than the justice and righteousness described by the Psalmist.
This is a reminder that the anointing of God isn’t a badge for our own glory; it’s an empowerment for service. We are changed by God so that we can represent His Kingdom, not so we can build our own brand. When the Spirit moves on us, it’s always to point back to the King of Kings who rules with the perfect justice Saul would ultimately lack.
Devotional Prompts:
- What does it look like for the Holy Spirit to change you into “a different person” in your specific context?
- How can we remain humble when God gives us influence or “anointing” in our fields?
- In what ways does Jesus fulfill the vision of the perfect King in Psalm 72 that human leaders fail to meet?
Prayer: Holy Spirit, fall fresh on me today and transform my heart. May the gifts and influence You give me be used to defend the vulnerable and bring glory to Your Name, not my own. Amen.
