Readings: Deuteronomy 28 | Psalm 50:13-23

Deuteronomy 28 is a heavy, polarized chapter. It’s the mountain of blessings and the valley of curses. It lays out the stakes of the covenant in stark terms: life and prosperity if you obey; death and destruction if you don’t. It sounds harsh to our modern ears, but it’s the reality of a universe governed by a Holy God. Our choices have weight. We aren’t just drifting; we are walking toward a destination.

But here’s the rub: none of us have perfectly obeyed. If we stand on our own record, we are firmly in the “curses” section of this chapter. This is where the Gospel explodes into the room. Paul tells us in Galatians that “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us.” He took the Deuteronomy 28 curses so we could inherit the Deuteronomy 28 blessings.

Psalm 50:14-15 gives us the practical pivot: “Sacrifice thank offerings to God… and call on me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you.” God isn’t looking for a perfect performance. He’s already provided that in Jesus. He’s looking for a heart of gratitude and a posture of dependence, even in the face of injustice.

The “grand narrative” leads us here: the Law shows us our need, and Grace gives us the Way. Don’t live in the shadow of the curse today. Live in the light of the Blessing that was bought for you at a price you could never pay. Then, offer your life as a living “sacrifice of thanksgiving.”

Devotional Prompts:

  • How does knowing that Jesus took the “curse” of the law for you impact your motivation for obedience?
  • What does “obedience” look like in our modern age? (Hint: it has nothing to do with your social media posts)
  • What does it look like to offer a “sacrifice of thanksgiving” in the middle of a difficult circumstance?
  • In what areas of your life are you still trying to “earn” a blessing rather than receiving it through Christ?
  • What does it mean to “consider this, you who forget God” in the context of your daily priorities?

Prayer: Gracious Savior, thank You for bearing the weight of the curse so that I might walk in the freedom of Your blessing. May my life today be a living sacrifice of praise, offered in gratitude for Your scandalous grace. Amen.
