Check out the backstory on Paul's first letter to the Thessalonians through this short overview video from the Bible Project.
Readings: 1 Thessalonians 1 | Psalm 104:19-35
Thessalonica was a bustling port city along the Via Egnatia, a major 2nd century trade highway developed by the Roman Empire. It was crowded with temples, local cults, and littered with tributes to Caesar. Paul preached there only a few weeks (Acts 17), yet he writes with astonishment at what happened: a church marked by “your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Thessalonians 1:3). The gospel arrived “with words [and] also with power, with the Holy Spirit” (1:5), and these new believers “turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God” (1:9).
Today’s Psalm gives us a preview of what that turning looks like. Psalm 104 quietly strips the ancient world’s favorite gods of their thrones. “He made the moon to mark the seasons, and the sun knows when to go down” (Psalm 104:19). The sun, a deity to many neighbors, is just a trusty instrument of God’s creation. Even Leviathan, the sea monster of pagan chaos myths, is merely something God “formed to frolic” in the ocean (104:26). All creatures “look to you to give them their food at the proper time” (104:27), and “when you send your Spirit, they are created” (104:30). Idols cannot feed a sparrow. They just sit on the shelf collecting dust. But the living God sustains every sparrow, and every Thessalonian, and each of us.
Notice, too, how Paul begins: “brothers and sisters loved by God” (1:4). Belonging comes first, and the work and endurance grow from that soil. The Creator who renews the face of the earth is the same Father waiting to renew you.
Devotional Prompts:
- Psalm 104 shows creation depending daily on God. Where are you tempted to trust a lesser source for your security or provision?
- Paul’s first word to the Thessalonians is that they are “loved by God.” How might hearing that before anything else reshape the way you serve?
Prayer: Living and true God, You hang the sun and moon and feed every creature in its season; we place our trust in You alone. Loosen the grip of every lesser thing that promises what only You can give. Renew us by Your Spirit, and let our faith, love, and hope reflect the Son we await. Amen.
