Readings: Joshua 6 | Psalm 57

Jericho was the ultimate fortress of high walls, hiding a terrified but entrenched enemy. And God’s battle plan? A seven-day parade. Joshua 6 shows us that God’s victories rarely look like human “wins.” Walking in circles for a week seems like a waste of time until the walls start crumbling. This story teaches us that obedience is more powerful than strategy. Just as tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat (according to Sun Tzu), strategy without obedience is an elaborate structure built on a foundation of sand (according to El Shaddai).

In the grand narrative, this is the precursor to the Cross; an event that looked like a total defeat to the world was actually the ultimate victory over the “walls” of sin and death.

The silence of the march for the first six days is just as important as the shout on the seventh. It’s about waiting on the Lord. It’s about trusting the process even when it feels pointless. Psalm 57 says, “I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings until the disaster has passed.” Sometimes taking refuge looks like walking in circles while you wait for God to give the signal.

When the walls finally fall, it’s clear: God did the heavy lifting. Our “shout” isn’t what knocks the walls down; it’s our response to the fact that God has already won. We don’t fight for victory; we fight from victory. Whether it’s a habit, a heartbreak, or a huge obstacle, the walls of Jericho remind us that no stronghold can withstand the presence of the Living God.

Devotional Prompts:

  • What Jericho wall are you currently facing that seems impossible to break through?
  • How does the silence of the first six days of the march challenge your desire for quick fixes and instant results?
  • In what areas of your life is God asking for simple obedience rather than a complex strategy?

Prayer: Lord of Hosts, Your ways are higher than our ways and Your thoughts higher than ours. Teach us to walk in obedience even when the plan doesn’t make sense to us. We praise You in advance for the victory, knowing that no wall can stand against Your power. Amen.
