Readings: Jeremiah 23 | Psalm 140
Jeremiah 23 opens with another indictment: “Woe to the shepherds who are destroying and scattering the sheep of my pasture!” (Jeremiah 23:1). God’s fury here is one of a Father whose children have been exploited, misled, and abandoned by the very leaders entrusted to care for them. False prophets were telling people what they wanted to hear; comfort without conviction, peace without repentance (Jeremiah 23:17), grace without confession. Leadership that prioritizes popularity over truth is not pastoral care; it’s spiritual malpractice. And God is not impressed.
But then comes the pivot that changes everything. In the very passage that condemns corrupt shepherds, God promises to raise up the ultimate Shepherd: “The days are coming when I will raise up to David a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land” (Jeremiah 23:5). His name? “The Lord Our Righteousness” (Jeremiah 23:6). This is messianic prophecy at its most direct; a King from David’s line who will be the source of righteousness for His people, not merely a model of it. Jesus fulfills this completely: He is the Good Shepherd who shows us not only how to live, but whose righteousness becomes our own by trusting in Him (Romans 3:22).
In a culture drowning in voices, Jeremiah 23 calls us to the simple, radical act of distinguishing the true Shepherd’s voice from the noise. The Good Shepherd still speaks to us today, and He always tells the truth. Are you listening?
Devotional Prompts:
- What voices in your life and media feeds might be functioning as “false prophets,” offering comfort without the truth that actually sets you free?
- What does it practically look like to “listen to the Shepherd’s voice” in your daily rhythms, and what makes that difficult in the noise of modern life?
Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are the Righteous Branch; the Shepherd who speaks truth and whose righteousness becomes ours by grace. Sharpen our ears to recognize Your voice above the noise of false comfort, and anchor our identity in the gift of Your righteousness. Amen.
