Readings: Jeremiah 31 | Psalm 1

We’ve jumped around in the major prophets these past couple of weeks to set the context for the last and final covenant that God makes with humanity: the New Covenant. It’s an unconditional promise conveyed in Jeremiah 31 that is the foundation for the Gospel of Jesus and the entire New Testament (which simply means, “new covenant”). Jeremiah had spent decades pronouncing judgment over a people who had broken their covenant to God. And here in the middle of the rubble, when all seems lost, we find the final promise that secures our future forever.

God first declares: “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness” (Jer. 31:3). It’s familiar covenant language from God, reminding us that God’s love isn’t contingent on performance; it precedes and outlasts our successes and failures. Then comes verse 31: the New Covenant. God announces that a day is coming when He will write His law not on stone tablets, but on human hearts (remember Ezekiel 36). No more external religious compliance. God is after something far more intimate: an interior transformation that makes obedience the overflow of love rather than the engine of it. The writer of Hebrews quotes this passage directly (Hebrews 8:8-12), making clear that Jesus is the mediator of this final covenant, sealed in His own life and resurrection. Every time we receive Communion, we’re standing in the middle of Jeremiah 31.

This is not a second chance, but the final arrangement. God doesn’t just restore the old; He is announcing the completion of creation, prompting us to cry out: “Come quickly, Lord Jesus”.

Devotional Prompts:

  • How does the New Covenant of Jeremiah 31 deepen your understanding of Jesus through the lens of the commentary we call the “New Testament”?
  • Where in your life do you still relate to God primarily through external activity rather than the interior love that fuels all missions?

Prayer: God of the new and eternal covenant, thank You for the breathtaking promise of Jeremiah 31, fulfilled in the body of Your Son. Write Your law deep within us, that our actions would flow not from fear but from love. Renew our hearts today and guard us forever. Amen.
