Readings: 2 Samuel 5 | Psalm 74:12-23
You might want to watch this short video overview of 2 Samuel from the Bible Project, providing context for the next leg of our journey through the "grand narrative" of Scripture.
In 2 Samuel 5, we witness a massive “at last” moment of the Old Testament. David has been running, hiding in caves, and dodging spears since his teenage anointing. But finally, all of Israel comes to Hebron to say, “We are your own flesh and blood.” The coronation isn’t just a political win; it’s a theological statement. When David captures the fortress of Zion, he isn’t just taking a strategic hill; he’s claiming the “City of David” where God’s presence will eventually dwell among His people.
David’s ascent is a foreshadowing of the true King. We see a man after God’s heart finally taking the throne, which points us straight to Jesus, the “Greater David,” who enters the heavenly Zion not by the sword, but through His own blood. The kingdom of Israel under David was a shadow of the coming Kingdom of God, just as the earthly temple was a shadow of the heavenly sanctuary where God dwells (Hebrews 8:5). It shows us that God’s promises might take time, but they are never actually late.
Psalm 74:12-23 echoes this beautifully. Even when the world feels chaotic or your sanctuary feels under attack, the Psalmist reminds us that “God is my King from of old, bringing salvation on the earth.” Whether it’s David taking Zion or Jesus rising from the grave, the message is clear: God is the sovereign architect of history. He’s the one who smashes the monsters and establishes the borders of the habitable world. When we feel like we’re in the waiting room of life, we look to 2 Samuel 5 and remember that the King is on His throne and still coming to make all things perfect.
Devotional Prompts:
- David waited years for the promise of the throne to be realized. Are you currently waiting for something, and how does David’s story encourage your patience?
- Zion was a stronghold that David conquered with God’s help. What are the strongholds in your own life that you need to lean on Jesus’ help to conquer?
- How does knowing that Jesus is the “Greater David” change the way you read Old Testament history?
- Psalm 74 calls God “King from of old.” In moments of modern chaos, how does God’s ancient track record of faithfulness ground your anxiety?
Prayer: Lord of the Kingdom, I thank You that Your promises never fail, even when the timeline doesn’t match my own. Rule over my heart today as David ruled over Zion, and let my life reflect the glory of Your eternal King, Jesus. Amen.
