Readings: Isaiah 9 | Psalm 101

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that I find myself in these passages of Scripture right now. I hear You, Lord. I confess I haven’t lived my life like someone whose Shepherd laid down His life for me (John 10:11). For too long, I’ve been more like David in 2 Samuel 11; passive, compromising, trying to manage sin instead of putting it to death (Romans 8:13). At 50, I feel the weight of choosing drift, comfort, and self over surrender, devotion, and calling. I confess I am a sinner in need of a Savior. I’m done trying to do this on my own. I was never meant to live apart from Him. This really is the “fight of my life”(check out the song with this title by Rend Collective).

Into that tension, Isaiah 9 speaks hope: “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light”(Isaiah 9:2). This is not just illumination, it is deliverance. God promises to “break the yoke of their burden” and bring joy like a harvest (Isaiah 9:3–4).

“For to us a child is born…” and He is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6).

  • As Wonderful Counselor, Jesus leads us in truth and wisdom (John 16:13).
  • As Mighty God, He breaks the yoke of sin and carries what we cannot (Isaiah 53:4–5).
  • As Everlasting Father, He brings us into secure adoption and lasting peace (Romans 8:15).

“Of the increase of His government and of peace there will be no end… the zeal of the Lord will do this” (Isaiah 9:7). This is the King who reigns, bringing light, freedom, and joy.

Psalm 101 shows the response. David declares, “I will…” as a life of intentional holiness. He commits to integrity, guarding his heart, and rejecting sin. It’s worship and war: choosing righteousness because we love God.

As we see in David’s story, and in our own lives (if we’re honest), left to ourselves, we fail. But through Christ, forgiveness is given, and we can walk in new obedience, because His righteousness has been given to us, not earned by us.

The King who saves us also calls us to live under His rule, with an undivided heart.

Devotional Prompts:

  • Where are you compromising instead of actively pursuing holiness?
  • What “next step” is Jesus calling you to take in surrender this week?
  • How do you need to rely on Him rather than yourself in the fight against sin?

Prayer: Lord Jesus, my Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, and Everlasting Father: Lead me. Forgive my compromise, strengthen me to fight sin, and help me walk in integrity. Thank You for calling me Your own. Shape my life for Your glory. Amen.
