Readings: 1 Samuel 16 | Psalm 73:15-28
After the failure of Saul, God sends Samuel to Bethlehem. It’s a classic underdog setup. Even Samuel, the great prophet, falls for the height and appearance trap again when he sees Eliab. But God shuts it down: “The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” This is the core of the Gospel. God bypasses the qualified (the older, stronger brothers) and chooses the unqualified shepherd boy to be the ancestor of Christ.
Psalm 73:26 echoes this: “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” David wasn’t chosen because he was perfect. His future would prove that. But his heart was oriented toward God, and that’s the most important part. This is a massive shift in the grand narrative: the establishment of the Davidic line, which is the physical lineage of Jesus.
God’s grace isn’t interested in your LinkedIn profile or your aesthetic. He’s looking for a heart that is desperate for Him. In a culture obsessed with filters and highlight reels, 1 Samuel 16 is a radical call to internal integrity.
Devotional Prompts:
- How much time do you spend grooming your outward appearance compared to tending to your heart?
- In what ways have you felt unqualified for God’s work, and how does David’s story encourage you?
- What does it mean for God to be the “portion” of your heart today?
Prayer: God of Grace, thank You for looking past my external failures and choosing me for Your Kingdom. Strengthen my heart today and make me more concerned with who I am before You than who I appear to be before others. Amen.
