Readings: 2 Kings 20 | Psalm 95

Hezekiah’s story takes a deeply human turn here. Faced with terminal illness, he weeps and prays, and God, in an act of staggering condescension, grants him fifteen more years. It’s a moment that shows us God isn’t a distant clockmaker; He’s a Father who listens to the cries of His children. However, the chapter ends with a sobering reminder of human frailty, as Hezekiah’s pride leads him to show off his treasures to the Babylonians, foreshadowing the future exile.

Psalm 95 calls us to a different posture: “Come, let us bow down in worship… for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture”. It’s a warning not to harden our hearts as the generation in the wilderness did. Hezekiah’s life shows both the power of a soft heart in prayer and the danger of a hardened heart in pride. Grace is a gift to be held with humility, not a trophy to be displayed for our own glory.

In the grand arc of Scripture, Hezekiah’s added years and his subsequent failure point us to the need for a King whose heart never wavers. Jesus is the one who didn’t ask for his own life to be spared; He laid His life down willingly and was raised to give us eternal years. He is the “Rock of our salvation” mentioned in Psalm 95, the one who leads us into a rest that Hezekiah’s kingdom could never fully realize.

Devotional Prompts:

  • When was the last time you truly “bowed down” in your heart, acknowledging God’s total authority over your future?
  • Is there an area where your heart is starting to “harden” toward God’s instructions? How might you address that?

Prayer: Lord, You are the healer of my soul and the giver of my days. Guard my heart against the subtle pride that comes with Your blessings. Help me to live this day as a humble member of Your pasture, listening for Your voice and following Your lead. Amen.
