Readings: [Judges 16 | Psalm 65

Samson is a mess. We often Sunday-school this guy into a superhero, but Judges 16 shows us a man whose boundaries are non-existent and whose ego is massive. Yet, in the grand narrative of Scripture, Samson serves as a mirror for ancient Israel, and for us. He is the judge who was set apart (a Nazarite) yet constantly compromised. His life is a cycle of charisma masking a lack of character, ending in the dark silence of a Philistine prison.

But here is where the grace of God kicks in: Even when Samson is blind, shamed, and grinding grain like an animal, God isn’t finished. Psalm 65 reminds us that God is the one who “stills the roaring of the seas” and “answers us with awesome and righteous deeds.” Samson’s final act wasn’t about his own gains or glory; it was a desperate cry for God to use a broken vessel one last time.

This points us directly to the true and better Samson, Jesus Christ. While Samson died to destroy his enemies in a burst of vengeance, Jesus died to save His enemies in an explosion of love. Samson’s strength was in his hair; Christ’s power was in His humility (oh, and His divinity). God takes the wreckage of our poor choices and, through the cross, sovereignly reassigns them to His kingdom purposes.

Devotional Prompts:

  • Where have you allowed your charisma or talents to outpace your spiritual character?
  • Samson’s hair began to grow back in prison. What slow growth of grace is happening in your current season of struggle?
  • How does knowing that God uses flawed leaders give you both hope and a healthy sense of caution?

Prayer: Lord, thank You that my failures are not the end of my story. When I am weak and blinded by my own pride, remind me that Your strength is made perfect in my mess. Use me, even in the wreckage, for Your glory. Amen.
