Readings: Exodus 2 | Psalm 25:12-22

We live in a world that worships the loud, the flashy, and the immediate. But Exodus 2 hits us with a different vibe. It’s the story of a baby in a basket, a sister watching from the weeds, and a seemingly rebellious princess who decides that compassion is more punk-rock than her father’s genocidal decree. This isn’t just a cute story, it’s the subversion of an empire. God isn’t dropping lightning bolts yet, but He’s working through the gutsy moves of women who refuse to let murder have the final word.

Theologically, this points us straight to the grand narrative of a God who often works undercover. Just as Moses was hidden in the Nile to eventually lead Israel out of Egypt, Jesus was born in a backwater manger to lead us out of the ultimate bondage of sin. It’s about the progressive revelation of a Deliverer. Sometimes, your current situation feels like you’re just drifting in a basket, hoping the crocodiles don’t notice. But the God of Psalm 25 is the one who ‘instructs him in the way he should choose’ and ‘delivers Israel out of all his troubles.’

The cool reality is that God’s providence often looks like a series of accidents until you see the patterns from the rearview mirror. Moses had to become a fugitive in Midian before he could become the leader of a nation. Don’t despise the wilderness seasons or the basket moments. If you’re feeling exiled or hidden, remember that God specializes in using the marginalized to dismantle the powerful. Your obscurity isn’t a dead end; it’s your training wheels.

Stop waiting for the big flashy sign and start looking at the small doors God is cracking open. The same God who moved a princess to compassion is moving in the hearts of those around you. Providence is often quiet, but it is never passive. It is a slow burning rebellion against the status quo of a broken world.

Devotional Prompts:

  • Where in your life are you currently hiding or feeling like you’re in a basket moment, and how might God be working there?
  • How does the quiet providence in Exodus 2 challenge your need for immediate, loud answers from God?
  • In what ways can you practice holy subversion against the injustices in your own community this week?

Prayer: Lord of the Hidden, give us eyes to see Your hand in the ordinary and the courage to act when compassion calls. May we trust Your slow burning providence even when the empire seems to be winning. Lead us from our Midian to the Holy Ground You have prepared. Amen.
