Readings: John 1 | Psalm 42

John's gospel is different from the other three. You might want to watch Part 1 of the Gospel of John from the Bible Project before we jump in.

“In the beginning was the Word…” John’s gospel begins with the beginning of time itself, echoing Genesis 1 on purpose. The same Word who brought light into darkness at the start of creation has now, astonishingly, become flesh and “dwelt among us”. Jesus literally “pitched His tent” among us, the way God once dwelt in the tabernacle. This is a major turning point in the grand arc of scripture: the eternal God, previously encountered through fire, law and sacrifice, now has a face, a voice, and sandaled feet.

Psalm 42 gives voice to what every human heart eventually feels: “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God.” The psalmist is in exile, cut off from the temple, aching with a homesickness only God can cure. John 1 answers that ache directly. You no longer need to travel to a temple to find God’s presence, because the Word has moved in next door.

I think about how our modern lives are often organized around desires that are never quite fully satisfied. We’re always eyeing some new purchase, the next career promotion, or some personal goal promising a sense of satisfaction that never seems to last. Ironically, “wanting” is often more exciting than “having” when it comes to worldly things. Augustine named this centuries ago, saying: our hearts are restless until they rest in God. John 1 tells us that restlessness has a cure: grace and truth that come through Jesus Christ, who is not far off. Immanuel is God with us, then and now, bringing lasting satisfaction to our thirsty souls.

Devotional Prompts:

  • Where in your life do you notice the “panting” Psalm 42 describes, a longing nothing else can fully satisfy?
  • What does it mean to you that the eternal Word chose to “dwell” among ordinary, dusty human life?
  • How does God “in human likeness” make God more relatable and approachable?

Prayer: Word made flesh, You have pitched Your tent among us and satisfied the deepest thirst of our souls. When we pant like the deer for water, lead us always back to the satisfying stream of Your presence. Amen.
