Readings: Ephesians 3 | Psalm 94:12-23

Paul prays that the Ephesians would be “rooted and grounded in love” and somehow comprehend just how wide, long, high, and deep the love of Christ really is. Notice that Paul is writing to people who already know the gospel. Apparently, knowing that Jesus loves us and actually building our lives upon that love are two different things. We never graduate from needing the gospel to sink deeper into our hearts.

Psalm 94 gives that love weight. “When I thought, ‘My foot is slipping,’ your steadfast love, O Lord, held me up.” God's love isn't sentimental. It holds us when life doesn't. Think of the roots of a mature tree during a storm: what keeps it standing is mostly hidden beneath the surface. The same is true of faith. Deep roots grow slowly as we learn, again and again, that Christ is faithful. Whatever feels uncertain today, you are being held by a love deeper than your circumstances.

Devotional Prompts:

  • What's the difference between knowing that God loves you and actually living as someone who believes they are deeply loved?
  • Think about a time when life felt uncertain or overwhelming. Looking back, where can you see God's steadfast love holding you up?
  • In Ephesians 3:10, Paul reveals an extraordinary part of God's plan: that through the church, God's manifold wisdom would be made known. What does this tell us about God's purpose for the church? How might it change the way we participate in the life of our church, knowing that God intends to reveal something of his wisdom and glory through us?

Prayer: Jesus, root my life more deeply in your love. When my footing feels uncertain, remind me that your steadfast love holds me.
