Refuge for the Ready

Today in Church History: On August 3, 1492 Columbus set sail from Spain, chasing gold and glory, as the story goes. But a lesser-known fact is that his diaries and letters indicate a genuine conviction that a shortcut to the East by sea would let missionaries travel faster, helping fulfill the Great Commission before the Lord's return.

Readings: Matthew 25 | Psalm 31:1-13

Three parables, one thread: the ten virgins, the talents, the sheep and the goats. Jesus keeps circling back to a single underlying question: will you be found faithful, awake, and generous when the King returns? This is about a life so rooted in relationship with Him that faithfulness becomes second nature, like a musician who’s practiced scales so long they no longer think about their fingers.

Psalm 31 gives us the soil this kind of faithfulness grows in: “In you, Lord, I have taken refuge.” Readiness flows from resting in God as a fortress. The five wise virgins weren’t smarter, they were simply prepared because their trust in the bridegroom was settled long before the midnight cry came. Our faithfulness in the ordinary days of life is quietly fueled by the same refuge the psalmist sang about three thousand years ago.
