Ready for Jerusalem

By Acts 21, everyone with a prophetic word is telling Paul the same thing: don’t go to Jerusalem, chains and suffering are waiting. Agabus even ties his own hands with Paul’s belt to make the point visually unforgettable. Paul’s friends weep and beg him to reconsider. His answer is one of the most sobering lines in the New Testament: he is ready not only to be bound, “but even to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.” This isn’t recklessness. It’s a man whose life has been reordered so completely that faithfulness now outweighs self-preservation.

Missionary Jim Elliot, killed in 1956 attempting to reach the Waodani people of Ecuador, wrote in his journal that a person is no fool to trade what he cannot keep for what he cannot lose. His widow, Elisabeth, later returned to live among the very people who had killed her husband; a costly echo of Paul’s resolve, and proof that the gospel’s math genuinely doesn’t work by the world’s accounting.

Psalm 63 gives voice to the desire fueling that kind of resolve: “O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you… your steadfast love is better than life.” Paul wasn’t chasing danger; he was following God, and Jerusalem simply happened to be where obedience led. When our thirst for God outgrows our thirst for safety, we start to look a little like both the psalmist and the apostle: unafraid, because we’ve already found what we were looking for.
