Empty Tomb, New Heart

John 20 opens in darkness, literally: “while it was still dark” (20:1)… but ends with a formerly doubting disciple falling to his knees crying “My Lord and my God!” (20:28). Between those two moments is the axis on which all of history turns: an empty tomb, a Savior who calls Mary by name, and a Thomas (like many of us) who needed to see before he could believe. Jesus doesn’t scold him for his inquiry; He simply shows up and offers His scarred hands, saying: “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed” (20:29). That’s an invitation extended straight through the centuries to us.

There’s a striking echo here in Psalm 51. David’s raw prayer of repentance after his affair with Bathsheba: “Create in me a clean heart, O God” (51:10). The Hebrew word for “create” is bara. It is the exact word used in Genesis 1 for God speaking the universe into being out of nothing. David isn’t asking for a tune up; he’s asking for a new creation. That’s precisely what Easter morning delivers on a cosmic scale: resurrection isn’t resuscitation of the old, but the dawn of an entirely new creation, with Jesus as the first of many.

C.S. Lewis was an outspoken atheist for years. He once described himself as being “the most reluctant convert in all England” dragged, kicking and resisting, toward the empty tomb his intellect couldn’t explain away. Doubt, it turns out, isn’t the opposite of faith. It’s often the doorway to it.
