Readings: 1 Corinthians 8 | Psalm 82
The first century marketplace in Corinth was a spiritual minefield. Meat sold in the market had often been offered to idols, and some believers felt free to eat it, while others felt it compromised their loyalty to Christ. Paul says the “strong” are technically right: idols are nothing, because “there is but one God, the Father… and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 8:6). But then comes a line worth memorizing: “Knowledge puffs up while love builds up” (1 Corinthians 8:1).
Here Psalm 82 sheds unexpected light. The psalmist pictures God presiding in the heavenly assembly and rendering judgment “among the ‘gods’” (Psalm 82:1). Every rival power that people have worshiped, from the carved statue to the lesser spiritual powers behind such worship, stands under the judgment of the one true God. The psalm ends with a prayer that captures the whole biblical arc: “Rise up, O God, judge the earth, for all the nations are your inheritance” (Psalm 82:8). The so-called gods are finished. Christ is Lord.
So what do we do with that victory? Paul says we don’t swing it like a club. Being right about idols doesn’t excuse us from caring about the sibling whose conscience is fragile. The deepest line is easy to miss: “whoever loves God is known by God” (1 Corinthians 8:3). Your theology matters, and so does the tenderness with which you live it. God’s knowing of you, not your knowing of the answers, is the ground you stand on.
Devotional Prompts:
- What modern “gods” compete for your loyalty even though you know they are powerless?
- When have you used being “right” in a way that failed to build someone up?
- How does being known by God, rather than knowing everything about God, change how you talk with people who disagree?
Prayer: One God and Father, one Lord Jesus Christ, You stand above every rival power and every false hope. Keep our knowledge humble and our love generous. Let us be known by You and make us gentle with those You love. Amen.
