Readings: Ruth 2 | Psalm 67

If you believe in coincidence, Ruth 2 is going to ruin that for you. The text says Ruth “happened” to end up in the field of Boaz. In the Hebrew mindset, that’s a wink and a nod. But it’s still the providential hand of God at work. Ruth is out there gleaning, doing the hard, humble work of a refugee, and she finds herself under the protection of a “worthy man.”

This isn’t just a “meet-cute” in a barley field. This is the Gospel in slow motion. Boaz notices the outsider. He protects her. He provides a table for her. This echoes Psalm 67’s cry for God’s “saving help” to be known among all nations. Ruth, the Moabitess, is experiencing the blessing that was always intended to flow through Israel to the rest of the world.

Boaz acts as a “Kinsman-Redeemer,” a type of Christ who looks upon our poverty and doesn’t just give us a handout, but gives us a place at the table. Hopefully this gives you a renewed sense of our Sacrament of Communion. Boaz tells her, “may you be richly rewarded by the Lord… under whose wings you have come to take refuge.” In the grand narrative, this is more than a romance (although it’s that too); it’s the legal and spiritual architecture being built to bring Jesus into the world. God is in the details of your daily grind just as much as He was in Ruth’s gleaning.

Devotional Prompts:

  • What happenstance in your life recently might actually be the providential hand of God?
  • Boaz provided for Ruth out of his abundance. How can you use your resources to protect the “outsiders” in your community?
  • How does the concept of a “Kinsman-Redeemer” change the way you view Jesus’ relationship to you?

Prayer: Lord of the Harvest, thank You that nothing in my life is a mere accident. Teach me to work faithfully in the fields where You’ve placed me, trusting that You are providing exactly what I need for today. Amen.
