Readings: 2 Kings 8 | Psalm 93
In 2 Kings 8, we step into a world of restoration and political upheaval. We see the Shunammite woman, a person who had previously experienced the miraculous power of God, returning to find her home restored by the king simply because he was hearing the stories of Elisha’s great works. It is a beautiful moment of grace-inspired generosity. Yet, the chapter quickly pivots to the darkness of Hazael’s rise in Aram and the spiritual decay in Judah. It’s a messy reminder that God’s providential care for the individual exists right alongside the chaotic rise and fall of nations.
As the grand narrative of Scripture progresses, God is preserving a remnant and maintaining His covenant objectives, even when the kings are failing and the borders are burning. Psalm 93 grounds us here, reminding us that “the Lord reigns” and is “robed in majesty”. While earthly thrones are shaky at best, the Psalmist declares that God’s throne is established from days of old.
Again, this points forward to Jesus, the True King. Unlike Hazael or the failing sons of Jehoshaphat, Jesus doesn’t seize power through violence; He secures it through sacrifice. He is the ultimate fulfillment of the restoration we see in the Shunammite woman’s story; the one who restores our true inheritance when all seems lost to the “famine” of sin.
Devotional Prompts:
- Where have you seen coincidental grace as God inspires people or timing of events to restore something you thought was lost?
- In what ways are you tempted to trust in “earthly kings” or systems rather than the sovereign rule of Christ?
- How does the stability of God’s eternal throne (Psalm 93) comfort you when world events feel chaotic or threatening?
Prayer: Eternal King, thank You that Your throne stands firm even when my world feels like shifting sand. Help me to trust Your providential timing and find joy in the way You restore the broken places of my life. May Your majesty be the anchor of my soul today. Amen.
