Readings: Zephaniah 3 | Psalm 112
Here's a short video overview of Zephaniah from the Bible Project, giving you more insight as continue our journey through the prophets of Israel.
Yep, we’re still in the prophets. Hang in there. Zephaniah 3 contains one of the most tender verses in all of Scripture: “He will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.” Take a second to let that hit your heart. The God of the universe, the one who holds galaxies together, is singing over you. This is the antidote to the striving culture that infects our spiritual lives. We often think we have to sing loud enough for God to hear us, but Zephaniah flips the script: God is the one singing, and our job is to be quieted by the song of His love. This is the goal of spiritual formation: to reach a place of inner stillness where the only thing we hear is the Father’s delight.
This divine delight leads to a life of stability, which we see described in Psalm 112. The person who “fears the Lord” (which is just another way of saying “lives in awe of Him”) is “not afraid of bad news.” Why? Because their heart is “firm, trusting in the Lord.” When we are quieted by God’s love in Zephaniah, we become the “unshakable” people of Psalm 112. This is the restoration of Eden; a return to walking with God in the cool of the day, where shame is gone and joy is the atmosphere. Jesus is the one who makes this “quieting” possible by removing the barrier of sin and inviting us into the Father’s song. Do you know Him?
Devotional Prompts:
- How often do you allow yourself to be “quiet” enough to hear the “song” God is singing over you?
- What “bad news” are you currently fearing, and how can the delight of God help you stand firm?
Prayer: Lord, quiet my restless heart with Your steadfast love. May I walk through this day with the melody of Your delight ringing in my ears, making me unshakable in the face of fear. Amen.
