Firm Foundation

Readings: Matthew 7 | Psalm 26

Matthew 7 closes the Sermon on the Mount with a reality-check: it’s not enough to hear good teaching, you have to build your life on it. Jesus warns about false prophets known by their fruit, and ends with the parable of two builders who encounter the same storm, with different foundations, and radically different outcomes. This is about spiritual integrity, the alignment of what we believe with how we actually live.

In Psalm 26 David asks God to “test” and “try” his heart, confident because he has “walked in his integrity.” That’s not a claim of sinless self-righteousness, but an honesty that is reliant on God. Engineers will tell you skyscrapers don’t fail because of the wind; they fail because of unseen cracks in the foundation poured years earlier. Spiritually, the same principle holds: the storms of life don’t create character flaws, they simply reveal weak foundations that were already there. Jesus is inviting us to let His words be bedrock, not decoration.

• What does it look like practically to ask God to test your heart, as David did in Psalm 26?
• Who is someone in your life whose “fruit” has shown you what genuine faith looks like?

Prayer: Lord, test my heart and reveal any cracks in my foundation. Build my life on the rock of Your words, and Your grace, so I stand firm in every storm. Amen.
