Readings: Daniel 3 | Psalm 4

Daniel 3 is another fantasic event in biblical history that hinges on one of the most courageous sentences ever spoken: “But even if he does not, we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up” (Dan. 3:18). Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego don’t just trust God to rescue them, they trust God completely. That’s a different and deeper kind of faith. Faith that isn’t transactional. Faith that doesn’t need a guaranteed outcome to remain faithful.

Nebuchadnezzar throws them into a furnace heated seven times hotter than normal; an indication of irrational rage that mirrors the way empires respond to those who refuse to bend the kneww. And then something extraordinary happens: a fourth figure appears in the fire, and the king describes him as looking like “a son of the gods.” Theologians throughout church history have seen this as a Christophany, a pre-incarnate appearance of Jesus. He actually makes numerous appearances throughout the Old Testament and is elsewhere referred to as “The Angel of the Lord.” Jesus doesn’t just rescue His people from the fire; He enters it with them. That is the Gospel in one image.

Psalm 4 echoes the effect this should have on our confidence: “In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.” True security is not the absence of the furnace, but the presence of God within it.

Devotional Prompts:

  • What does “even if He does not” faith look like in your own life? Where are you being called to trust God without a guaranteed outcome?
  • How does the image of the fourth figure in the fire deepen your understanding of God’s presence with you in your own suffering or difficulty?

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You that You are not a distant observer of our suffering. When the heat is turned up and the pressure is on, remind us that Your presence is our true safety. Strengthen our faith in today’s fires. Amen.
