Readings: Hosea 4 | Psalm 104:1-18
You might want to watch this short video overview of Hosea from the Bible Project, providing context for the next leg of our journey through the "grand narrative" of Scripture.
Hosea 4 brings heavy words, but it’s a necessary for a soul that wants to grow deep. God has a controversy with the land because there is no faithfulness, no love, and no knowledge of God. It’s a spiritual void that leads to chaos. We often think of sin as just breaking rules, but Hosea reveals it as a breach of intimacy; a spiritual infidelity. When we lose our ‘knowledge of God,’ we lose our bearings. This isn’t about intellectual facts; it’s about ‘Yada’ (knowing) the experiential; a heart-level knowing our Creator. Without this connection, the world starts to unravel, which Hosea describes in stark and sobering terms.
Psalm 104 provides the perfect contrast, showing us what a world looks like when it is held together by the wisdom and presence of God. It celebrates a creation that ‘knows’ its place and its Provider. The mountains rise, the valleys sink, and everything finds its rhythm in Him. Jesus eventually steps into this narrative as the ‘True Vine’ (John 15), the one through whom we are re-attached to the source of life. He is the bridge back to that ‘knowledge’ Hosea says we lack. Spiritual formation, then, isn’t about trying harder to be good; it’s about leaning harder into the intimacy we were designed for. When we know Him truly, the ‘faithlessness’ of our hearts begins to heal, and we find our place in divine intimacy once again.
Devotional Prompts:
- How do you distinguish between ‘knowing about God’ and ‘knowing God’ intimately?
- What ‘controversies’ might God have with the rhythms of your own heart right now, preventing you from ‘knowing’ Jesus more intimately?
Prayer: Lord of Life, pull me back from the distractions that dull my knowledge of You. Restore the intimacy that my soul was built for, and let my life reflect the order and beauty of Your creation. Amen.
