Readings: 1 Samuel 9 | Psalm 71:13-24
1 Samuel 9 is a masterclass in the unseen hand of God. Saul is out looking for his father’s lost donkeys, a mundane, frustrating task that feels like a total waste of time. But in the economy of God, there are no wasted moments. What Saul thought was a search for livestock was actually a divine appointment to be anointed as the leader of Israel. This is the beauty of God’s providence: He uses the ordinary to accomplish the extraordinary. This theme ripples through the entire Bible, from Joseph in the Egyptian prison to the disciples fishing on the Sea of Galilee.
As Psalm 71:17 says, “Since my youth, God, you have taught me, and to this day I declare your wondrous deeds.” Saul’s story reminds us that God’s wondrous deeds often begin in the middle of a frustrating Wednesday. We think we’re just “searching for donkeys” (dealing with taxes, chores, or career dead-ends), but God is positioning us for His purposes.
However, there’s a subtle warning here. Saul was “a head taller than any of the others,” and while he looked the part of a king, the heart is what matters. In the grand narrative, Saul is the king of the people’s choice, while David (and ultimately Jesus) is the King of God’s choice.
Devotional Prompts:
- When has a frustrating or mundane detour in your life actually led to a divine opportunity?
- How can you practice seeing God’s hand in your daily, boring tasks this week?
- Why is it dangerous to choose leaders (or goals) based solely on outward appearance?
Prayer: Lord of the Ordinary, help me trust Your providence even when I’m lost in the mundane details of life. Open my eyes to see the divine appointments You have hidden in my daily routine. Amen.
