Readings: 1 Kings 11 | Psalm 83
1 Kings 11 is one of the most tragic chapters in Scripture. Solomon, the wisest man to ever live, ends up with a “divided heart.” His 700 wives and 300 concubines weren’t just a moral failure; they were a theological disaster. They turned his heart away toward Chemosh and Molek. The man who built the Temple for the one true God is now building “high places” for idols. It’s a warning that wisdom without obedience is just intellectual vanity.
This moment in the arc of Scripture shows us the necessity of the “Circumcised Heart.” Solomon had the external blessing, the heritage, and the brains, but he couldn’t keep his heart centered. This points us to our desperate need for the Holy Spirit. We don’t just need a wise teacher like Solomon; we need a Saviour-King who can transform our very desires. Because Solomon failed, the kingdom was torn apart; a physical parallel to his torn heart.
Psalm 83 reflects the chaos that ensues when we drift from God. The enemies of God’s people “conspire with one accord.” When our hearts are divided, we find ourselves surrounded by spiritual conflict. The only way to survive the uproar of the world (and our own sin) is to remain rooted in the singular worship of the Most High.
Devotional Prompts:
- Solomon’s drift was gradual, not overnight. What small compromises are you making that might be pulling your heart away from God?
- How does the failure of a wise man like Solomon encourage you to rely more on the Holy Spirit than your own intellect?
- Is there a “high place” or an idol in your life that you’ve built up while still trying to worship God?
Prayer: Lord, I ask for an undivided heart. Protect me from the slow drift of compromise and keep my eyes fixed solely on You. Thank You for being the King who never fails and for sending Your Spirit to guide me in truth. Amen.
