Readings: 2 Corinthians 4 | Psalm 87

“But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us” (2 Corinthians 4:7). In Paul’s world, clay jars were the cheap, disposable containers of everyday life, like empty Amazon boxes. He is describing the apostolic life: hard pressed but not crushed, perplexed but not in despair, struck down but not destroyed (4:8–9). Behind the imagery is Genesis 1, where the God who said “Let light shine out of darkness” now shines in our hearts “the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ” (4:6). New creation, delivered in humble packaging.

In 1947, a young Bedouin shepherd searching for a lost goat tossed a stone into a cave near the Dead Sea and heard something shatter. Inside were clay jars containing ancient scrolls, among them a nearly complete copy of Isaiah, preserved for roughly two thousand years. The most precious texts of Israel’s faith had survived not in vaults of gold but in ordinary pottery. God has always preferred it that way.

This is good news for the weary. Your limits, your fatigue, and your cracks are not disqualifications. They are the wear and tear of the container that holds the light. “Outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day” (4:16). Paul calls our troubles “light and momentary” next to an eternal weight of glory, not because they don’t hurt but because glory is heavier still.

Devotional Prompts:

  • Where do you most feel like a “cracked pot,” and how might God’s power show up precisely there?
  • What daily practices help you fix your eyes on what is unseen rather than only on what is pressing?

Prayer: Lord Jesus, You shine in ordinary vessels so that no one mistakes the glory for ours. Renew us today from the inside out, and let the light in us leak through every crack. Teach us to see what lasts. Amen.
