Clean Robes, Clear Conscience

Zechariah is an important book in prophetic history that points to Jesus. This overview video of Zechariah from the Bible Project provides some foundational context to help prepare us for the New Testament, which is coming in just a few more days!

Zechariah 3 feels like a courtroom scene. Joshua the high priest stands before the Lord in filthy garments (Hebrew for something far cruder than “dirty”) while Satan stands ready to prosecute. And then, without a single word of self-defense from Joshua, God simply commands: “Remove the filthy garments… I will clothe you with pure vestments” (3:4). No probation. No performance review. Just grace that cleans him up before asking him to do anything.

This is the gospel in miniature. Our accuser has plenty of material to work with (let's be honest), but the verdict has already been rendered by the only Judge whose opinion counts. Rewind to Zechariah 1, which adds the familiar invitation: “Return to me… and I will return to you” (1:3). Repentance isn’t groveling; it’s turning toward a God who’s always facing us with open arms.

Prayer: Gracious God, thank You for silencing the accuser before I even open my mouth to defend myself. Clothe me again today in the righteousness that is Yours to give, and let Your glory be as evident to me as the sky above. Amen.
