Readings: Deuteronomy 7 | Psalm 46
Let’s get one thing straight: you didn’t choose God because you were the smartest, the strongest, or the most capable person in the room. Deuteronomy 7 drops a heavy truth bomb on the Israelites, and on us. God didn’t set His affection on them because they were some massive superpower. He chose them because He loved them and because He keeps His word. Period. It’s about God’s character, not our clout.
In a world that screams “earn your keep” and “hustle for your worth,” this is a counter-cultural reality. We are chosen by grace. But that grace isn’t a license to be cozy with the world’s idols. Moses tells the people to tear down the altars and smash the sacred stones. Why? Because you can’t have a “side hustle” with other gods when you’re in a covenant with the Creator of the universe.
In the grand narrative of Scripture, this is the foundation of the Gospel. We see the shadow of Christ here: the One who would eventually be the ultimate “Chosen One” to fulfill the covenant we couldn’t (or wouldn’t) keep. He entered the chaos so we could find the stillness mentioned in Psalm 46. When the world is literally falling apart around us, and the mountains are falling into the heart of the sea, we don’t panic. Why? Because the God who swore an oath to a group of wandering nomads in the desert is the same God who is our refuge and strength today.
Stop trying to prove you’re worthy of the seat you’re sitting in. You’re there because of God’s faithfulness, not your performance. Now, go live like someone who actually believes the battle belongs to the Lord, because it does.
Devotional Prompts:
- God chose His people because He loved them, not because of their size; how does this impact your identity?
- How does the command “Be still and know that I am God” help you face your current “terrible nations”?
- Why is it important to completely remove the “idols” that tempt you to compromise your devotion?
- Is it possible that your theological convictions about the world’s current conditions are actually idols in the eyes of God?
Prayer: Sovereign Lord, thank You for holding onto me when I struggle to hold onto You. Help me to tear down every idol I’ve built in the secret places of my heart, and let me rest in the unshakable refuge of Your presence. Amen.
