Bitten But Not Bound

Paul survives a shipwreck only to get bitten by a viper while gathering firewood. The islanders on Malta assume he’s a murderer finally getting his cosmic karma until he simply shakes the snake into the fire and keeps working. No swelling, no symptoms. No big deal.

Acts closes with Paul under house arrest in Rome, chained to a guard, and yet the very last line of the book tells us he preached the kingdom of God “with all boldness and without hindrance.” That word, “unhindered,” is the real theme of Acts 28. Snakebites, shipwrecks, prison chains: none of it can slow down a gospel that was promised all the way back in Genesis 3, where the seed of the woman would one day crush the serpent’s head. Every obstacle Paul faces is a small preview of that final, cosmic defeat.

Romanian pastor Richard Wurmbrand spent fourteen years in communist prisons for preaching Christ. He endured years of torture and isolation designed to silence him. Instead, he preached to fellow prisoners through cell walls, wrote sermons from memory, and later said the experience only deepened his love for the God who never left him alone in that cell. His body was chained; the gospel he carried was not.

You may be dealing with something right now that feels like venom in your veins: a diagnosis, a betrayal, a failure you can’t get past. Shake it into the fire. It does not get the final word over your life.
